Overview of Darvocet 100 mg
It is a combination medicine that is used to manage mild to moderate pain, which can occur with or without fever. Darvocet comprises propoxyphene napsylate and acetaminophen. This combination medicine is a generic variant and acts as an active ingredient in the branded Darvocet medication. Darvocet N 100 oval pill is also available as Darvocet 100 mg in the market.
It is a US FDA-approved prescription-only drug for use as an opioid pain analgesic drug. There may be a low probability of drug abuse, misuse, and dependency.
Propoxyphene napsylate belongs to the narcotic class of drugs which act as mild analgesics and acetaminophen is a non-narcotic, weak pain reliever, fever reducer (antipyretic) as well as enhances the effects of propoxyphene.
Pharmacological Effects of Darvocet Medication:
The precise mechanism of the Darvocet medication is not known yet. It consists of propoxyphene napsylate and acetaminophen, which belongs to the drug class known as narcotic pain reliever. This medication binds to the opioid receptor, which is located in the central nervous system in the brain.
This binding closes N-type voltage-operated calcium channels. On the other side, it opens up calcium-dependent inward rectifying potassium channels which ease potassium to move into the cell. This decreases the neuronal excitability and helps to reduce pain.
The analgesic effectiveness of this medicine is due to the combination of these two components. It is so because a single ingredient has less efficacy as compared to both active components.
Darvocet Medication’s Dose & Dosage Strength:
The dose and dosage strength of the medicine are administered by a healthcare provider. The dose may be increased or decreased by a doctor. It depends on the medical condition of a patient and the severity of the pain. This pain relief drug is available in the form of oral tablets.
It is oval-shaped, orange colored and imprinted with Darvocet-N 100 on one side of the tablet. Its dosage strengths are as follows:-
- Darvocet-N 100 (Propoxyphene napsylate – 100 mg and acetaminophen – 650 mg)
- Darvocet-N 50 (Propoxyphene napsylate – 50 mg and acetaminophen – 325 mg)
- Darvocet-A 500( Propoxyphene napsylate -100 mg and acetaminophen -500 mg)
The recommended dose is one tablet taken orally in four hours, and it can also be used as per requirement for pain. A patient can consume a maximum of 6 tablets in a day. It is suggested not to go beyond this maximum dose.
Note: Termination of Therapy
When there is no requirement of Darvocet therapy to treat pain, it is recommended that the medicine should be stopped. It is to avert opioid withdrawal syndrome. The dose should be cautiously decreased day by day. If some symptoms start to develop, then the dosage strength has to be raised to the previous level. A healthcare professional has to be careful with increasing or decreasing the dose of the medication.
