Overview
Prozac is a brand-name antidepressant drug. It contains Fluoxetine as an active ingredient. This medicine belongs to the group of drugs called, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Prozac drug is widely used to manage various types of mental disorders such as depression, panic disorders, eating disorders, etc.
Prozac 20 mg is also used with many other medicines like Olanzapine (Zyprexa) for treating manic depression, which is caused by bipolar disorder. The Prozac 20 mg drug works by blocking the reuptake of Serotonin, which is a hormone and neurotransmitter (chemical messenger). It is responsible for controlling the patient’s mood and other functions.
This inhibition process helps to increase the levels of Serotonin in the gap between nerve cells. Increased Serotonin levels assist in enhancing Serotonin signaling that can have antidepressant effects on the patient’s body.

Prozac 20 mg capsule is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). This is when a woman has severe mood and physical symptoms the week before her menstrual period.
In addition, Prozac medicine is also prescribed for treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Depression related to bipolar I disorder in children.
The off-label uses of Prozac drug are to relieve symptoms of such types of health conditions as migraine, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), fibromyalgia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Premature ejaculation, borderline personality disorder, and many others.
Dose and Dosages :
It is available in the form of oral capsules and comes in various dosage strengths like 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg.
A doctor may prescribe Prozac 10 mg dosage as an initial recommended dose that can be taken once a day. The maximum daily limit is 80 mg for Prozac medication.
