Overview
Oxycodone is an opioid-based narcotic analgesic and a generic variant drug which acts as a pain reliever and helps in treating various kinds of pain. The pain can vary from moderate that can be short-term or long-term to adverse pain such as pain due to cancer and severe injury.
There are two forms of this medication, such as extended-release (ER) and immediate-release (IR). IR form is approved by the FDA for pain management. The ER form is approved for a long-term treatment to treat pain when other drugs are not effective in reducing pain in individuals.
As a generic variant, Oxycodone is used as an active component in various branded medicines like OxyContin, RoxyBond, Oxaydo, Roxicodone etc. The drug is considered as a Schedule II controlled substance, which means there is a high risk of being abused and misused.
5 mg oxy pill can be identified by its white-color, round shape and with an imprint of M on one side and 05 52 on the other side of the tablet.
Function of Oxycodone 5 mg Medication
Among the three opioid receptors (mu, kappa, and delta) Oxycodone works well with the mu-opioid receptors or MOR and binds with it. After binding, the G-protein is induced and reduces the level of cAMP or cyclic adenosine monophosphate.
Due to the activation of the mu-opioid receptor, it prevents calcium channels and opens up potassium channels. This is how the medication produces an analgesia effect and reduces the pain.
