This medication contains a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen. People can buy Percocet Online or at any pharmaceutical store to treat pain.
It belongs to a narcotic analgesic combination drug class. The generic variants of Percocet are acetaminophen and oxycodone which are also the active ingredients present in the medicine.
Uses of Percocet Drug:
This combination medications is used to help minimize moderate to severe pain in patients. Percocet is usually prescribed after surgeries, such as dental procedures, orthopedic surgeries, or abdominal surgeries, to alleviate acute pain during the recovery period.
Percocet drugs can be prescribed to patients suffering from terminal illnesses such as cancer. It provides comfort and improves their quality of life by easing severe pain. In emergency situations, it may be administered to individuals with severe pain due to conditions like kidney stones, severe burns, or traumatic injuries.
Recovering from…
Wisdom tooth extraction
Typical recovery: worst pain on days 1–3, easing over a week. Where Percocet fits: rarely. The American Dental Association’s 2024 guideline recommends ibuprofen or naproxen, alone or combined with acetaminophen, as first-line for dental pain, and advises avoiding opioids in most cases. In studies, that combination works as well as or better than opioid combinations. What else helps: cold packs for the first 24–48 hours, soft foods, rest with your head raised. See Percocet vs. Ibuprofen.
Knee or hip replacement
Typical recovery: pain is significant for the first 1–2 weeks, especially around physical therapy, and improves over 6–12 weeks. Where Percocet fits: commonly prescribed for the first days to couple of weeks, often timed 30–60 minutes before therapy sessions, alongside scheduled acetaminophen or an NSAID if your surgeon allows. What else helps: ice, elevation, keeping up with exercises (stiffness causes more pain later), sleep.
C-section
Typical recovery: incision pain peaks in the first few days. Where Percocet fits: many people need little or no opioid after leaving the hospital when they take scheduled ibuprofen and acetaminophen. If you’re breastfeeding, use the lowest dose for the shortest time and watch the baby for unusual sleepiness or feeding trouble. See Oxycodone in Pregnancy. What else helps: splinting the incision with a pillow when coughing or standing, walking early.
Broken bone
Typical recovery: sharpest pain in the first few days after the injury or surgical repair. Where Percocet fits: short-term, for the worst days. Immobilization and elevation do a lot of the work. What else helps: elevation above heart level, ice, the splint or cast doing its job. Ask your surgeon whether NSAIDs are OK for your fracture; some prefer to limit them in the early healing period.
Kidney stone
Typical recovery: episodes of severe pain until the stone passes or is removed. Where Percocet fits: backup only. NSAIDs are first-line for kidney-stone pain because they also reduce spasm and swelling in the ureter, and they work at least as well as opioids. What else helps: fluids, any medicine your doctor prescribes to help the stone pass. Seek urgent care for fever, vomiting you can’t stop, or very little urine.
Laparoscopic abdominal surgery (gallbladder, hernia, appendix)
Typical recovery: a few days of incision and gas pain. Where Percocet fits: many patients need only a handful of tablets, or none, with scheduled acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Surgical quality groups such as Michigan OPEN publish procedure-specific recommendations showing how small most needs are. What else helps: walking (it moves gas and shoulder-tip pain), a pillow to splint the belly.
Cancer pain
Where Percocet fits: for some people with cancer, a combination like Percocet is a step on the way to stronger or long-acting opioids. The acetaminophen limit eventually caps how high the dose can go, which is why people with ongoing cancer pain are often switched to plain oxycodone or a long-acting opioid. See Pain Relief Drugs for Cancer and OxyContin.
The step-down plan
Most people can move off Percocet within days after surgery or injury. A common pattern:
- Days 1–2: Percocet as needed, plus scheduled non-opioid relief if your surgeon approves.
- Days 3–4: Stretch the time between Percocet doses. Use it mainly before activity or at night.
- Days 5–7: Use non-opioid relief first; Percocet only for breakthrough pain.
- After that: Stop. After a short course, most people can stop without tapering. If you’ve taken it regularly for more than a week or two, ask about a taper.
If you still need Percocet as often as on day 1 after a week, call your surgeon. That can be a sign of a complication. For non-opioid options, see Oxycodone and Ibuprofen.

Leftover pills
Unused Percocet in a medicine cabinet is one of the most common sources of opioid misuse, often by teenagers or visitors. When you’re done:
- Best: a pharmacy or police take-back kiosk, or a DEA Take Back Day.
- Otherwise: follow the FDA’s disposal instructions.
- Until then, keep it locked and counted.
Counterfeit “Percocet” warning. Fake tablets made to look like Percocet and other oxycodone products are widespread in the illicit supply, and many contain fentanyl. The DEA’s lab testing shows that a large share of fentanyl-laced fake pills contain a potentially lethal dose. They can’t be identified by eye. Only take Percocet dispensed to you by a licensed pharmacy. See the DEA’s fake pill fact sheet and Oxycodone vs. Fentanyl.
FAQ
Is Percocet stronger than Norco or Vicodin?
Slightly, milligram for milligram: oxycodone is a bit more potent than hydrocodone. At typical prescribed doses they’re used for similar pain. See Percocet vs. Norco and Vicodin vs. Percocet.
How long does Percocet last?
Pain relief usually lasts 4–6 hours. Oxycodone’s half-life is about 3.5–4 hours. For testing windows, see How Long Does Percocet Stay in Your System? and How Long Does Percocet Stay in Your Blood?.
Can I take ibuprofen with Percocet?
Often yes, if your surgeon or doctor agrees. Ibuprofen contains no acetaminophen, and the combination is common after surgery.
Is Percocet better than tramadol or Dilaudid?
It depends on the pain. Tramadol is weaker; Dilaudid is much stronger. See Tramadol vs. Percocet and Dilaudid vs. Percocet.
Why is Percocet so constipating?
All opioids slow the gut. Start fluids, fiber and a stool softener or gentle laxative with your first dose. See What Helps With Constipation.
Can Percocet be addictive after surgery?
Yes. The chance of ongoing use rises with longer first prescriptions and more days of use. Using the fewest tablets for the shortest time lowers the risk. See Hydrocodone Addiction for warning signs that apply to all opioids.
Can I buy Percocet online?
Only from a licensed US pharmacy with a valid prescription. As a Schedule II drug, it can’t be refilled. The FDA’s BeSafeRx explains how to check a pharmacy.
