A medication drug that is administered by healthcare experts for the management of excessive weight or obesity is Phentermine. It is a generic drug. Phentermine is the member of the class of anorexiants (drugs used for treating obesity). This pharmaceutical medicine you can buy online or at any medical pharmacy that is recommended to be taken after a medical consultation only.
Healthcare experts typically suggest the usage of Phentermine together with a proper diet for the best weight-loss results. It acts as a stimulant for the central nervous system and reduces appetite in individuals. Doctors often advise weight-losing programs together with this medicine.

Late-day doses should be avoided for all forms because of insomnia. The maximum for people with severe kidney disease is 15 mg a day.
Who it’s approved for, and who it isn’t
Approved for: adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. Not recommended for anyone 16 or younger (17 for Lomaira).
Contraindicated (shouldn’t be used) in people who:
- have heart or blood vessel disease, including uncontrolled high blood pressure
- took an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days
- have hyperthyroidism or glaucoma
- are in an agitated state or have a history of drug misuse
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
Uses of Phentermine Drug:
Phentermine is administered by healthcare experts for treating the following health complications.
1. Obesity
For treating obesity in persons, doctors use the Phentermine medication drug. They examine the health conditions of patients before the administration.
2. Appetite Suppressant
Overeating can increase appetite. Those who want to suppress their appetite can use Phentermine under the guidance of the concerned medical practitioner.
3. Lifestyle Modification
Many individuals want to improve their lifestyle and look lean. After getting medically consulted, they may use Phentermine medicine.
Phentermine Dosages:
Phentermine over the counter medicine is available in the form of an oral tablet, capsule, extended-release and compounding powder. Typically, an 8 mg dosage of Phentermine is administered by healthcare experts to their patients. This is an initial dosage. The dosages may be given 3 times a day depending on the medical conditions of an individual.
This weight loss medicine is administered for the short-term treatment and not for a long-term treatment. Patients are not advised to take this medicine at late night because that could cause insomnia in them. The highest amount of dose of this drug should not be more than 15 mg per day.
How it works
Phentermine is a sympathomimetic amine, structurally related to amphetamine. It causes nerve cells to release norepinephrine (and, to a lesser degree, dopamine and serotonin), mainly in the hypothalamus. The result is reduced hunger and earlier fullness. The same norepinephrine effect raises heart rate and blood pressure, which is why cardiovascular disease is a contraindication. A longer explanation is in What Phentermine Does to the Body.
What the evidence shows
- Short-term studies: phentermine plus lifestyle changes leads to more weight loss than lifestyle changes alone. Most original trials lasted 2 to 24 weeks.
- Tolerance: the appetite effect often weakens within a few weeks. The label says to stop the drug, not raise the dose.
- Long-term use: some clinicians prescribe it off-label for longer, but long-term safety data are limited. NIDDK notes it’s approved “only for use for a few weeks.”
- Combined with topiramate (Qsymia): produced larger, longer-lasting weight loss in one- and two-year trials, which is why that combination is approved for long-term use.

Interactions

- Other weight-loss drugs, stimulants and decongestants: add to heart rate and blood pressure effects. ADHD stimulants are a common example; see Phentermine vs. Adderall and Does Adderall Cause Weight Loss?
- Insulin and diabetes medicines: needs may fall as you eat less, so blood sugar should be watched. See Does Metformin Reduce Belly Fat?
- Blood pressure medicines: phentermine may reduce their effect.
- Alcohol: the label warns that it may cause an adverse reaction.
Myth vs. fact
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “Phentermine burns fat.” | It reduces appetite. Weight loss comes from eating less. |
| “A higher dose works better once it stops working.” | When tolerance develops, the label says to stop, not increase. |
| “It’s the drug that was banned with fen-phen.” | Fenfluramine was withdrawn in 1997. Phentermine was not. |
| “It’s over the counter.” | It’s a Schedule IV controlled substance that needs a prescription. |
| “You can flush it out quickly.” | Its half-life is about 20 hours, and it clears mainly through the kidneys over several days. See How to Flush Phentermine Out of Your System. |
FAQ
How long does phentermine stay in your system?
With a half-life of about 20 hours, most of a dose is gone within 4 to 5 days, but urine tests can detect it for a few days after the last dose. See How Long Will Phentermine Show Up on a Drug Test?
What happens when you stop?
Appetite usually returns, and some people feel tired or low for a short time. See What Happens When You Stop Taking Phentermine.
Is phentermine the same as Adipex?
Yes. Adipex-P is a brand of phentermine.
Which strength is right?
That’s a prescriber’s decision based on your weight, health and how you respond. Many people do well on a lower dose or half-tablet. The approved maximum for most people is 37.5 mg a day.
How do I get a prescription?
Through an in-person or telehealth evaluation with a licensed prescriber. See How to Get a Phentermine Prescription Online and the FDA’s BeSafeRx guide.
