Overview of Restoril

A medication drug that is prescribed by doctors to individuals for treating insomnia is Restoril. The generic variant of Restoril is temazepam. Uses of Restoril:

Doctors recommend this sleeping pill to manage the following disorders

Insomnia

For the treatment of insomnia, It is commonly administered by health specialists. This medicine should be taken after a medical consultation only. 

Anxiety

For some individuals, Restoril may work in the treatment of anxiety. This is because the drug has sedative effects, which can be helpful in dealing with anxiety. 

Epileptic Seizure

A seizure that is caused due to epilepsy is an epileptic seizure. Restoril may be suggested for persons who are suffering from this health complication. 

Recreation

This medicine may be used by persons for recreational purposes because of sedative effects. However, its overdosage for recreation is dangerous. 

Dosages:

For adults, Restoril at dosage strengths of 7.5 mg, 15 mg, and 30 mg are administered by the doctors to their patients. After examining the response of an individual to the drug, the dosage that has to be given is selected. 

Withdrawal reactions may occur in persons after some months of taking this pharmaceutical drug. Those who are aged are required to first discuss their health complications with the doctor prior to getting a consultation on the drug.  

Restoril Side Effects:

Side effects may occur in individuals after taking an oral dosage of Restoril. Some side effects are:

• Constipation
• Drowsiness
• Increased heart rate
• Blurred vision
• Mood swings
• Nightmares
• Nervousness
• Vomiting
• Difficulty while sleeping
• Backache
• Fatigue
• Lack of appetite

These side effects may be common or uncommon in persons. The health complications must be reported to the concerned doctor immediately. 

Precautions:

Precautions must be taken by persons when using Restoril medicine. Firstly, those who are suffering from depression and any lung complications must not take this drug. Alcohol should not be consumed when taking an oral dose of Restoril. Anyone who has missed the dose of the drug should not take the double dosages. Restoril has the potential to cause addiction. Hence, it should not be misused. 

Boxed Warning, Explained

Restoril carries the FDA’s boxed warning for the whole benzodiazepine class, updated in 2020. It has three parts.

1. Risks with opioids

The label says: Using benzodiazepines with opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.

What that means for you: This is the most dangerous combination in the label. If you take any opioid (prescription pain medicine, codeine cough syrup, or methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorder), your prescriber needs to know before Restoril is prescribed. See “The Opioid Rule” below.

2. Abuse, misuse, and addiction

The label says: Use of benzodiazepines exposes users to risks of abuse, misuse, and addiction, which can lead to overdose or death.

What that means for you: Taking more than prescribed, more often, or for effects other than sleep raises these risks sharply, especially combined with alcohol or other drugs. Your prescriber should assess your risk before prescribing and keep assessing it.

3. Dependence and withdrawal

The label says: Continued use may lead to clinically significant physical dependence. Abrupt stopping or rapid dose reduction may cause acute withdrawal reactions, which can be life-threatening.

What that means for you: Physical dependence can develop even when you take it exactly as prescribed. Never stop suddenly after regular use. Work out a taper with your prescriber (see “Coming Off Restoril”).

What Restoril Is (and Isn’t) Approved For

The label adds an important note: if insomnia hasn’t improved after 7 to 10 days, that may point to an underlying medical or psychiatric condition that needs evaluation. Restoril isn’t intended to be a long-term fix.

Dosage and Strengths

Take one capsule at bedtime. The label’s adult range is 7.5 to 30 mg. Prescriptions should be for short courses, with reassessment if they continue.

Why It Can Feel Slow to Start

Temazepam peaks in the blood about 1.2 to 1.6 hours after a dose, slower than zolpidem or triazolam. The common mistake is taking a second capsule because the first “isn’t working.” Don’t. A second dose stacks sedation into the early morning and raises the risk of falls, confusion, and next-day impairment.

If Restoril consistently takes too long to work, tell your prescriber. Don’t change the timing or dose on your own.

Once it’s working, its half-life averages about 8.8 hours (range 3.5 to 18.4). That’s longer than the Z-drugs and much longer than Halcion, which is why some people feel groggy the next morning. See How Long Does Temazepam Last?

Why Temazepam Is Different in the Liver

Many benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, are broken down by liver CYP enzymes into active metabolites that keep working for days. Temazepam is different: it’s cleared almost entirely by conjugation (glucuronidation) into an inactive compound that’s excreted in urine.

What that means in practice:

• No long-acting active metabolites building up night after night.
• Fewer CYP-enzyme drug interactions than benzodiazepines like triazolam, which is contraindicated with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors.
• It doesn’t mean “safe for everyone.” Sedation, falls, and dependence risks still apply, especially in older adults.

The Opioid Rule

Restoril and opioids both slow breathing. Together, the effect can be far larger than either alone, and it’s a leading factor in overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines.

• If you take any opioid, including hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, tramadol, methadone, or buprenorphine, don’t start Restoril without your prescriber knowing.
• If both are prescribed, the label calls for the lowest effective doses and shortest duration, with monitoring for sedation and breathing problems.
• Warning signs: extreme sleepiness, slow or shallow breathing, blue lips, or being hard to wake. Call 911.

Interactions

Who Should Not Take Restoril

The current label lists one formal contraindication: allergy to temazepam or any capsule ingredient.

But it’s rarely a good fit, and needs careful discussion, for people with:

• Opioid use (see above)
• Sleep apnea, COPD, or other breathing problems
• Depression or a history of suicidal thoughts
• A personal or family history of substance or alcohol use disorder
• Age 65+ (higher fall and confusion risk)

Next-Day and Memory Effects

Add beneath the existing side-effect list:

• Morning grogginess is more likely than with short-acting sleep medicines because of the longer half-life. Don’t drive until you know how it affects you.
• Complex sleep behaviors (sleep-driving, eating, or phone calls with no memory) have been reported with benzodiazepine hypnotics, particularly with alcohol.
• Memory gaps for events after the dose.
• Paradoxical reactions (agitation, aggression, hallucinations) are uncommon; report them the same day.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Older Adults

Pregnancy: older temazepam labels listed pregnancy as a contraindication. The current label (2023) doesn’t, but it warns that babies exposed late in pregnancy may be born sedated or go through withdrawal and should be monitored. Discuss any use in pregnancy with your prescriber.

Breastfeeding: benzodiazepines can pass into milk and cause sedation in the baby. Talk to your prescriber.

Adults 65+: start at 7.5 mg. The American Geriatrics Society’s Beers Criteria recommend avoiding benzodiazepines in older adults where possible because of falls, fractures, and cognitive effects.

Coming Off Restoril

If you’ve taken Restoril for more than a few nights in a row, plan the stop with your prescriber. The label calls for a gradual, patient-specific taper.

Before the taper: Tell your prescriber how long and how often you’ve taken it, and whether you’ve used alcohol or other sedatives alongside it.

During the taper: Doses come down in steps over days to weeks, depending on how long you’ve been taking it. Expect some rebound insomnia. It usually improves.

Watch for: anxiety, irritability, shakiness, sweating, fast heartbeat, or sensitivity to light and sound. Seizures, confusion, or hallucinations are emergencies. Stopping suddenly after long-term use is what makes these more likely.
