Xanax XR 3 mg is used for the treatment of panic disorder and symptoms of anxiety related to panic disorder. Alprazolam is the main ingredient in Xanax, and this is an extended-release (XR) medicine. XR tablets are slowly released and remain effective for a longer duration in the human body.

This drug belongs to benzodiazepine medication. It acts on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a soothing effect.

The function of Xanax XR 3 mg Drug:

It functions in such a way by improving a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA). GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a natural chemical in the brain.

GABA is a type of neurotransmitter that helps in passing messages between nerve cells in the brain. This creates a peaceful effect on the brain. By increasing the level of GABA, Xanax helps to decrease the tension in the nerves and the body’s natural response to stress.

The Recommended dose of Xanax XR is 3 to 6 mg per day.

The initial dose of the drug can be 0.5 mg to 1 mg once daily (the preferred time is morning).  The dosage can be increased to 1 mg at the most daily depending on the patient’s response to the dose.

Common side effects of the drug include:

• Decrease in appetite or unusual weight changes
• Increase in sweating
• Unable to speak words clearly

Severe side effects can include:

• Suicidal thoughts or thinking
• Depressive mood
• Hallucinations or seeing things beyond reality
• Uncontrolled muscle movements
• Seizures
• Memory problems
• Feeling aggravated or uneasy
• Pounding Heartbeat, i.e., heart beating at an unusual fast rate

Precautions and Safety Measures:

1) Use of benzodiazepine including Xanax XR increases the risk of misuse, abuse, and addiction that can result in overdose or death of the patient.

2) Taking this drug with opioid drugs or alcohol may induce drowsiness or breathing problems.

3) Sudden stopping of or withdrawal from the medication can cause serious withdrawal symptoms, especially if the person is using the drug for a long period or in high doses.

4) Xanax XR makes one feel sleepy and can slow the thinking and motor skills.

5) Even if other people have similar symptoms, do not share this drug.

6)  Pregnant women never take this drug.
