Mechanism of Action of Rozerem drug:

Ramelteon is an active component of Rozerem, and it belongs to the class of medicine called melatonin (MT) agonist. MT is a hormone which is responsible for sleep circadian rhythms in a person.

The drug activates melatonin’s receptors. Due to high affinity, Ramelteon binds with MT1 and MT2 rather than MT3 receptor. These receptors are present in the region of the hypothalamus (suprachiasmatic nucleus – SCN) of the brain.

The SCN controls the sleep-wake cycle, and it is also referred to as a master clock. The MT1 enhances sleep and MT2 causes a circadian phase shift in which sleep time and wake-up time will be in advance or delayed. This is how medicine regulates the sleep-wake cycle of a patient.

Dosage for Adults

The advised dose is 8 mg for adults half an hour before going to sleep. The dose should not be greater than the allowed dose.

Dosage for Liver Failure Patients

Patients with adverse hepatic impairment,  they cannot take this drug.
